David grew up in the East Valley of Phoenix. After high school, he studied Sociology at Northeastern University in Boston while playing four years of Division 1 hockey, then became a professional hockey player. Before joining 1MISSION, David spent two years in the real estate industry and was working toward a general contractor’s license. David fell in love with 1MISSION's work while on his first build trip and continues to go twice a year.
Josh grew up in Peoria, Arizona and went on his first build trip way back in 2008, the year 1MISSION was founded. After graduating high school, he went on a trip to Nicaragua and fell even more in love with 1MISSION’s impact on the world. He is now majoring in Global Politics at Arizona State University and hopes to attend law school. When he's not studying or DJing at events around Arizona, Josh works on our Partnerships team, enlisting more and more people in the cause.
David first volunteered with 1MISSION in 2009 and he's been returning every year since then. Born and raised in Mesa, Arizona, he is a talented photographer who also assists with operations at our basecamp in Puerto Peñasco. When he's not at work in Mexico, he can be found chasing storms with his trusty camera or photographing beautiful real estate properties for his clients. On especially clear nights with low light pollution, he's likely to be out in the wilds of Arizona, getting long-exposure shots of the Milky Way.
After moving to Arizona from Texas, Natalie discovered her passion for missions. Graduating with a degree in Global Health from Arizona State University, she couldn’t be more excited that she now gets to spend time getting others involved and helping them find their role in missions. Not only does she love to travel and do life with others, but Natalie and her husband also have a goal of kayaking on every continent. Two down, five to go!
Before joining 1MISSION, Erin worked in the mortgage industry for over a decade in a variety of roles, helping people finance their homes. So when two of her friends invited her to volunteer at a 1MISSION event to provide houses for families in poverty, she was hooked. A natural party planner, Erin’s craftiness is instrumental in bringing our events together and making them a blast for everyone involved. Erin is an Arizona native and is married with two kids. Oh, and she was switched at birth. Ask her about it sometime!
Tim grew up in Guatemala as a dual citizen before moving with his family to the United States during high school. After studying communication and journalism as an undergrad, he earned a master's degree in international development and worked in communication and media relations roles at World Vision for three years. When he isn't writing, you can find him reading books, listening to Bob Dylan records, or playing in the men's softball league in Tempe, Arizona.
Going back to the days when Steve was a youth pastor in northern California, he and his wife Tammy have loved taking their sons with them on mission trips. So when the Doerksens were introduced to 1MISSION in 2012 they were all in, recognizing an opportunity to involve the church Steve pastors in Buckeye, Arizona, in a meaningful mission project along with his whole family, with ages ranging from 6 to 70. After multiple house build trips, Steve – who is an experienced church planter – was hired by 1MISSION to help develop a strategy aimed at launching a church planting movement in the Rocky Point barrio and then to serve as the coach, guiding the strategy development.
When Merle first convinced her husband, Greg, to take their three kids on a mission trip to Mexico 12 years ago – chances are, neither of them had any idea where it would lead! It is the friendships she has formed with the families and children on her many trips to Mexico that are her biggest inspiration. You’ll meet her in your “in-box” where she’ll help you with the administrative details of your trip; and then you’ll meet her again in Mexico, (where she’ll mysteriously turn into Mirla) and where she will help you with anything from mixing cement to replacing your forgotten towel!
Although born and raised in Phoenix, Katie graduated college in Kansas and came to us from L.A., where she orchestrated events in a group home facility for pregnant and parenting teens. A super planner since birth, she’s the logistical genius behind all of our major events. When she’s not on the phone or checking out venues, you’ll find her running, hiking, or doing something crafty. Fun fact: Katie LOVES exclamation points!!!
Edric is originally from Sonora, Mexico. He dominated his education, graduating with a degree in industrial engineering, a minor in finance, and an MBA from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Monterrey, Mexico. He's held finance positions in both public and private sectors. All of this amazing experience makes him the perfect fit as Finance Director. In his free time, he enjoys travel and art like a true classy gentleman.
When you meet Nate for the first time, you will literally think you have been friends for 10 years. After graduating from Arizona State and then Phoenix Seminary with a Masters in Biblical Studies, Nate spent 7 years in the Czech Republic, where he was a youth camp coordinator. He uses his years of field experience, as well as his love for making a difference in people’s lives, to engage people in our mission. When he’s not traveling around meeting with churches and new people, you can catch Nate at any sporting event. He’ll be the one having in-depth conversation with total strangers.
For most of his career, Greg worked in the private sector in geomatics engineering in the oil and gas industry of Western Canada. He moved to the Phoenix area in 2001 and was a partner in a civil engineering firm where he served as President. In 2007 Greg and his family traveled to Mexico to build a house for a family. Greg and his wife, Merle led one of the first house build trips with 1MISSION. That trip led to the decision in 2010 to leave the business world behind and join 1MISSION, first as a full-time volunteer and, over time, to the position as President.
After years of volunteering in Mexico - building dozens of houses, Jason was compelled to do more. In 2008, he left his career as a professional firefighter and founded 1MISSION with a vision of empowering families and communities to lift themselves out of poverty. Jonathan has lived his entire life in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. He is married with one child. Jonathan loves construction and joined the Mexico team in 2018.
Carlos has lived in Puerto Peñasco most of his life. He is married and has 5 children and 10 grandchildren. He has served with 1MISSION as a construction foreman since 2017. Although he is a quite person he is always listening and learning from those around him.
Harris has lived in Puerto Peñasco for the past ten years with his wife Lupita and son Harris. He is an energetic, people person who loves working hard.
Growing up in the barrios of Hermosillo in Sonora, Mexico, Pedro knows what it’s like to live without much hope. After attending the University of Sonora, he made it his life mission to spread a message of individual dignity and belonging among the world’s impoverished. After 10+ years of leadership in Hispanic churches throughout California, Arizona, and Mexico, he now helps his community in Puerto Penasco identify problems and the assets they have to implement solutions.
